A good investment June 12, 2010 Martin 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have gone through 3 Hoover Steam-Vac carpet cleaners over the years. This past week my 2 year old Steam-vac failed. The cost and availability of repair parts was not something I wanted to deal with again. To be fair they did clean the carpets well. I am now ready for a "real" carpet cleaner. I was familiar with the Rug doctor product for a long time but was always hesitant to use a rental as I worried about the last user abusing the machine etc. I know from observing...the returned units were never inspected or cleaned by the rental store!!! I chose the mighty pro plus model as it offered all of the optional goodies. I could have purchased just the machine then all the accessories but the cost would have been actually higher. I am surprised though that I had to pay sales tax. I suspect that's because this unit is sold by Target via internet and we have Target stores here. The machine arrived ready to go. Everything was there although I did panic at first as some of the parts were sent in the dirty water bucket and I did not seem initially. Set up took less than 5 minutes. Being tall I really appreciated the adjustable handle system. The machine is a lot quieter than I expected. The hoover steam-Vac is much louder!!! My dogs were not even bothered by the Rug Doctor motor/vac noise. Getting used to a pull to clean and the lift a push to set for the next row is counter intuitive. At first it's a bit awkward as we typically would rather push but you get the routine easily. I really like the hard floor cleaning tool. I have tile floors and the floor tool is wonderful. There are a few cons and suggestions..... 1. they should design the water supply tank with a window to view how much you have instead of relying upon the change in pump noise. I understand why the reservoirs are the size they are as the unit could be much heavier and difficult to maneuver. 2. They should include a drain hose to make emptying the clean water reservoir easier....Yeah they sell one for $15.95 but come on..... 3. I could not justify the cost of the larger unit although it does have larger reservoirs by about 1.2 gallons and has a wider cleaning path by about 2" Bottom line made in USA! a 5 year warranty and coming with replacement filters and brushes I'm good to go. I encourage you to get the mighty-pro plus it will provide many years of reliable service. Martin
Fees just the same as rental, except it is blue May 13, 2010 +++ (OR, United States) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I've been renting RugDoctor from local retailers twice per year for nearly 15 years, and finally decided to purchase my own one. I had to go through some arguments with myself: with the current rental rate for a unit with an upholstery attachment which is around 30 dollars per 24 hours it would take almost 8 years for the purchase to pay back (475/30 = 15.8 times to rent to spend the same amount of money on rent as retail price = about 8 years for payback). With this kind of payback time renting makes more sense. On the other hand, I no longer have to clean the whole house within 24 hours (after which the whole family has to go somewhere for the rest of the day to allow the floors dry completely), I can do it one room at a time, and I can clean any spill right away before it dries out and will become impossible to clean. In my experience since I bought one, I found that one room at a time also dries much faster... So with these arguments in mind, I decided to buy one. It is exactly the same size, same design, and has the same feeling as the rental standard width unit, except it is blue rather than red. The only difference is that it does not have a counter for the hours of operation which retail units have. Even hoses are packed in exactly the same bag as rental units. It also cleans the floors just the same. I've been happy with rental RugDoctors over many years, and the retail version which I now owe works just as fine and cleans carpets just as great. I purchased mine from costco because of their total customer satisfaction policy which has no time limits on returns and refunds and because of significantly lower than the street price (although it comes without the hardwood floor attachment and with fewer cleaning solutions than the Target version, so price comparison might not be fair). So if it ever breaks down I can just take it back to the store for refund and do not need to even worry about the manufacturer's warranty. So far, I've been happy.
This machine sucks! July 15, 2009 J. Day (Northwest suburban Chicago) 4 out of 4 found this review helpful
We have owned multiple carpet cleaning machines and this one does the job. We bought it at [...] because they have a good return policy. I have not needed to use the antifoam and use Walmart brand cleaner. Our carpets were very wet after cleaning but we got a lot of dirt up. I found that if I clean them and go over them with plain hot water a couple days later it gets out all the cleaning sol'n. The attatchment seems to work well on the stairs and sucks up a lot of the wetness. We went in halfs with my parents and it was easier to buy. I will definitely reccomend this carpet cleaner
Beware of Deceptive Warranty July 13, 2009 Michael Finn (Cheyenne, WY United States) 11 out of 11 found this review helpful
We purchased this item 9 months ago at a local department store, after finding a good sale on it. We have rented RugDoctor carpet cleaners many times in the past and they are generally durable and do a reasonably good job of cleaning carpets. They don't clean as well as most professional carpet cleaners who show up at your home, but they clean as well as any rental unit I've ever used. If you plan to purchase one of these, make sure you get it at a retailer who will stand behind it, because you can't count on RugDoctor to do so. The floor attachment works well for cleaning hard surfaced floors, but it is made from flimsy plastic construction. Ours broke at a joint where one of the hose clamps hold the solution hose to the handle. This was after a few uses over less than 9 months of ownership. Rather than return the whole unit to the retailer, I thought it might be easier to get the part directly from RugDoctor. WRONG. RugDoctor responded to my email inquiry in a reasonable time but informed me the upholstery attachment and the floor attachment were not part of the unit and those only came with a 90 day warranty, rather than the 5 year warranty on the cleaning unit. I'm still trying to find that in the warranty, to no avail. Notice in the description of this item above, the upholstery attachment and the floor attachment are not mentioned in the written description of the item. They are pictured, and they are included as part of the item. But according to the good folks at RugDoctor, there is a separate, secret warranty on the attachments. I cannot maintain faith in, or customer loyalty with, a company which engages in such shifty business practices.
BEST SELF CLEANER AVAILABLE March 7, 2009 Susan Eberhart (Ohio, USA) 14 out of 14 found this review helpful
I have been renting this machine around 28 years, tried to buy one 20 years ago but the old rentals still sold for $1000. When I rented one, would clean carpet and cushions in travel trailer; car flooring and seats and house carpet and furniture in one day and still be able to move around the next day. Even the air in the house would smell cleaner. My method was to pass at least 4 times over the same areas (or until the water is clear in intake tube) moving very slow as others have mentioned and then go over the area a couple times just removing the moisture (until no more water is seen in intake tube), turn on ceiling fans and carpet is dry within a couple hours -the suction is so strong that it pulls the carpet up off the floor. Now have a house with only 2 rooms with carpet and an area rug in the living room along with usual furniture and still bought the machine. This unit comes with a wand for non-carpet floors and a few times each year I clean the wooden floors with water/scrub brushs and this tool picks up the water -I might get rid of the Hoover I bought to clean the non-carpet areas. Years ago, my mother didn't listen to my suggestion and hired professionals to clean her carpet, paid $100 but ended up having to rent a Rug Doctor to do the job correctly; she was a perfectionist, very hard to please but she loved this machine (used a rental but they seem to be the same machines). The other carpet machines with spinning brushes only push the dirt down into the base of the carpet so it looks dirty quickly and they don't have as strong of suction to remove the dirty water. This machine moves the nap back and forth fluffing it, removing walk patterns while the very powerful suction removes the water. This machine's dirty water bucket will have a mud layer on the bottom from cleaning clean looking carpets or furniture. Seeing the dirt does give me a feeling of accomplishment and encourages me to keep cleaning. I would recommend someone to rent a unit to see how well it cleans and buy one if they like it -I didn't notice a difference in the power of the rentals and this model. Sorry, I sound like someone in love, but at the age of 63, I paid this price because it is the only machine I had great sucess with. Originally, bought the ones with spinning brushes not much suction (in the 70's), then rented ones that had a wand attachment -would have back spasms for days because you need to push down and pull the wand at the same time. They didn't have enough suction to pull out the liquid and the only scrubbing action was from moving the wand. After doing this for a couple years, rented the Rug Doctor and was in love. Recently, have seen some other machines copy the Rug Doctor's set-up, guess that means they have realized how great this machine is. I did a lot of thinking before buying this unit due to my age and having less carpeting, not sure I would live long enough to "get my money's worth," but hate having to do everything in one day and this way can spread the work out. They want around $150 to clean 1 couch & 2 chairs (couple years ago paid to have this done, it was a poor 5 minute job), $80 to clean an area rug that cost $35 at Home Depot (everyone had a flat fee for area rugs) plus the cost of cleaning 2 rooms at a sale price $50. This still leaves the car and trailer dirty. Cleaning a car floor and seats would be $50 +. Hopefully, this machine will last for generations and the grandchildren will be fighting over it. Reading what others have stated about foam, I was told to add a small amount of fabric softener in the dirty bucket if foam becomes a problem. It doesn't happen if you use the Rug Doctor carpet shampoo but might happen if someone has cleaned the carpet previously with a high foaming cleaner.
